Astro-Dictionary: Coordinated Universal Time |
|---|
By international agreement, this is the local time at the prime meridian, which passes through Greenwich, England. Previously, it was referred-to as Greenwich Mean Time; now it is simply called Universal Time. For the Central Time Zone, UT is six hours ahead of us, or five hours ahead during daylight savings time. Since it’s independent of the observer’s time zone, UT is used to clearly identify the timing of astronomical observations from anywhere on Earth.
