Astro-Dictionary: Synodic Period

This refers to the time between two successive conjunctions of a planet with the sun, as viewed from the Earth. For the interior planets, an inferior conjunction is when they lie between us and the sun. A superior conjunction occurs for all the planets; it's when they pass behind the sun as seen from Earth.
