Astro-Dictionary: Sublimation

Sublimation refers to the situation where a substance goes from one state to another without passing through the normal intermediate state. A typical example: As a comet approaches the sun, the ice in the coma is heated, but because space is cold and airless, the ice goes directly into a gaseous state, rather than becoming a liquid (i.e.: turning into water).
