As sunlight strikes an object in the solar system, the light is not reflected uniformly in all directions. The brightness of the reflection from a planet or satellite depends on the angle between the direction from the sun to the object and the direction of the Earth to the object. This dependence on the angle of incidence is known as the phase effect.
