Noctilucent (“night-shining”) clouds are thin, wispy clouds, glowing electric blue, that are usually seen after the sun has set. They occur on the fringes of space, at 80 to 100 km in the Earth’s atmosphere. They were first reported in 1885 after the eruption of the volcano Krakatoa in Indonesia. While they have been regularly seen since then, their cause in uncertain. Some scientists think they’re seeded by space dust, while others suggest they could be a telltale sign of global warming.
