Astro-Dictionary: Geosynchronous and Geostationary |
|---|
The term geosynchronous applies to any satellite with an orbital velocity equal to the rotational velocity of the Earth. The net effect is that the satellite appears virtually motionless with respect to an observer on the ground. And another term: If a satellite’s distance from the surface of the Earth remains constant, regardless of its orbit, it is said to be geostationary.
