Astro-Dictionary: Escape Velocity

If an object leaves Earth's atmosphere at about 11 km/sec (7 miles/second, or about 25,000 miles/hour), it will escape the earth's gravity. This speed is called the escape velocity of the Earth. Below this speed, it will eventually come back to Earth. Other celestial bodies have different escape velocities.
